Contrarian Quote of The Week:

The U.S. federal government spent over $19 billion dollars in 2003 on the War on Drugs, at a rate of about $600 per second. The budget has since been increased by over a billion dollars.

State and local governments spent at least another 30 billion.

We'll let you IMAGINE the math for the last 6 years (2003 to 2009).

And, while we've been pretty agreeable about NOT turning our VIP LWL newsletter into a political hack vehicle, we'll just leave you this Friday by asking you to consider what it means to be fighting such a pointless battle AFTER you read about Jonathan Ayers"the latest victim of Richard Nixon’s long-running, unwinnable, immoral War on Drugs."

Quote of the Week:

"It's time to legalize drugs. Nationwide, a police officer dies on-duty nearly every other day. Even more officers are shot and wounded, too many fighting the war on drugs. Better police training and bigger guns are not the answer.

"Cities and states license beer and tobacco sellers to control where, when, and to whom drugs are sold. Ending Prohibition saved lives because it took gangsters out of the game.

"Prescription drugs are regulated, and while there is a huge problem with abuse, at least a system of distribution involving doctors and pharmacists works without violence and high-volume incarceration. Regulating drugs would work similarly: not a cure-all, but a vast improvement on the status quo."

— Former Baltimore police officers Peter Moskos and Stanford Franklin in The Washington Post

"Almost all the others copy/paste what’s been said a million times before, throw in an ad for the latest “breakthrough technique” (also about a million years old) and come back a week later with the same thing.

"It’s an amazing world full of amazing people if you scratch beneath the surface. Thanks for scratching!"
